Across Japan, local governments are demonstrating that photovoltaic power can do much more than simply generate clean electricity. Municipalities are developing innovative projects that integrate renewable energy into public services, strengthen local economies, improve energy resilience, and accelerate the transition toward carbon neutrality.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of the most innovative examples comes from Nagai City in Yamagata Prefecture, which has launched Japan’s first ‘RE100 School Lunch’ initiative. Rather than simply installing solar panels, the city has integrated locally generated renewable energy into one of its most essential public services\u2014school lunches.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The RE100 School Lunch program is built around three key principles.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • First, daily school meals are prepared using locally produced ingredients, including rice and vegetables grown in Nagai City.<\/li>\n
    • Second, the meals are cooked using renewable electricity generated within the city.<\/li>\n
    • Third, food waste from the school lunch center and local elementary and junior high schools is recycled and returned to farmland, creating a circular resource system that supports sustainable agriculture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

       <\/p>\n

      To power the initiative, the city installed 400 bifacial PV modules on municipal land adjacent to the school lunch center. The solar array has a capacity of 234 kW and is expected to generate approximately 251 MWh of electricity annually. About 165 MWh will be consumed directly by the lunch center, while the remaining 86 MWh, generated when the facility is not operating, will be supplied to other municipal facilities. This maximizes the utilization of locally generated renewable electricity and improves overall energy efficiency.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      The RE100 School Lunch initiative demonstrates how solar power can create value beyond electricity generation. By combining renewable energy, locally sourced food, and resource recycling, Nagai City has developed an environmentally friendly model that supports carbon neutrality, strengthens regional energy self-sufficiency, and promotes a circular economy.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      As more municipalities across Japan pursue decarbonization, projects like this highlight how community-based solar initiatives can deliver environmental, economic, and social benefits simultaneously. They also provide practical examples of how renewable energy can become an integral part of everyday life, rather than simply another source of
