Japan PV module shipment volume in FY 2022

2023.06.22
PV Market Size

Japan Solar Update: No.50 (June 19 ~ 23, 2023)
shipment volume FY 2022

The IEA PVPS Report puts global annual and cumulative installed capacity in 2022 at 240 GW and 1.27 TW, respectively.  China ranked first in annual installed capacity at 106 GW, followed by the U.S. at 18.6 GW, India at 18.1 GW, and Japan at 6.5 GW.

JPEA announced Japan’s shipments through FY2022 (Apr, 2022 ~ Mar, 2023).  Since there is a time lag between shipments and installations, the two figures do not necessarily match, but trends such as trends by application can be grasped.

<Key points>

    • The Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association (JPEA) released the PV module shipment statistics in the quarter from January to March 2023, and the annual shipments in Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 (April 2022 to March 2023) were disclosed
    • Total module shipments in FY 2022 decreased by 0.5% year on year (YOY) to 5,106 MW, and domestic shipments also decreased by 0.3% YOY to 5,085 MW

<Key points>

    • By application, shipments for utility-scale applications remains on the decreasing trend, a drop of 12.8% YOY to 2,372 MW. Meanwhile, the shipments of commercial applications increased by 6.2% YOY to 1,460 MW and the residential applications increased by 24.8% YOY to 1,250 MW. Introduction of non-FIT PV systems through PPAs and support for residential PV systems and storage batteries by local governments are progressing
    • Domestic production and shipment of PV modules have continued to decline, and the ratio of imports reached 90%
