Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd and Sekisui Jushi Corporation announced that they have jointly installed film-type perovskite solar cells on the exterior walls of the Dojima Kanden Building, where the Osaka headquarters of both companies are located, for the first time in Japan (as a “permanent installation” of film-type perovskite solar cells on the exterior walls of a building in Japan).

The Dojima Kanden Building is currently undergoing a large-scale renovation, scheduled for completion in April 2025. 48 building material panels with film-type perovskite, each approximately 1 meter square, have been installed on the south side 12th floor wall.  By installing perovskite solar cells on walls at this timing, This is not only to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, but also to use them for long-term quality evaluations, such as monitoring the amount of power generated by perovskite solar cells and monitoring changes over time.

Sekisui Chemical has engaged in a joint study with Sekisui Jushi Corporation on an “installation method that can withstand wind loads on the 12th floor for 20 years and maintain stable power generation performance. The two companies have depeloved building material panels with film-type perovskite solar cells by combining Sekisui Chemical’s lightweight flexible perovskite solar cell and adhesive technology, Sekisui Jushi’s lightweight fireproofing panel “PLAMETAL” and composite material technology. “PLAMETAL” is a laminated composite panel of metals such as aluminum or steel and plastics or inorganic materials, which has excellent smoothness, light weight, rigidity, durability, and workability, created by the proprietary lamination technology of Sekisui Jushi, a Sekisui Group company.

Going forward,  Sekisui Chemical will further develop the technologies for building material panels with film-type perovskite solar cells, road and traffic products such as sunshade shelters and soundproof walls of Sekisui Jushi, and building exterior products such as fences, and will further investigate installation and construction methods on the exterior walls of existing buildings. Sekisui Chemical will also utilize the Green Innovation Fund of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to accelerate development toward establishing a 1-meter-wide manufacturing process and further improving durability and power generation efficiency, aiming for commercialization in 2025.
