PV Market Trend/Information
Japan Solar Update: No.104 (July 8 ~ 12, 2024)

Recently, had a chance to visit Trina Solar’s state-of-the-art n-type TOPCon (i-TOPCon) cell and module factory and wafer slicing factory in Huaian, Jiangsu, China. The experience was truly remarkable, showcasing impressive automation, cleanliness, and safety standards.

Trina’s Huaian facility really represents modern manufacturing prowess. The factory is impeccably clean, adhering strictly to the 5S methodology and rigorous safety protocols. The scale of operations is vast, with advanced automation streamlining the manufacturing process.

One standout aspect of the factory is its comprehensive approach to production. The facility includes wafer, cell, and module factories, all dedicated to the mass production of n-type i-TOPCon “Vertex N” modules. This integration marks a significant shift in the photovoltaic (PV) module industry, with traditional PV module manufacturers now covering the entire supply chain internally while traditional wafer and cell suppliers are venturing into PV module production.

The wafer factory operates two production lines. One line produces leading 210mm rectangular silicon wafers, while the other focuses on square wafers. This dual-line setup ensures versatility and capacity to meet diverse market demands.

The cell factory is a hive of robotic activity. Robots efficiently handle large volumes, transporting 1,000 units of PV modules at a time to the next stage of production. Factory staff primarily focus on process control and equipment maintenance, ensuring smooth and continuous operation.

There are five module factories in Huaian site. The entire module production process, from start to finish, is completed in just seven hours. This efficiency underscores Trina’s commitment to rapid, high-quality manufacturing.

The integration of the entire supply chain within a single site, combined with cutting-edge automation and stringent cleanliness and safety standards, sets a new benchmark for PV module manufacturing. This holistic approach is poised to drive the industry forward, with both traditional PV module manufacturers and new entrants from the PV wafer and cell manufacturing sectors playing pivotal roles in accelerating PV installations.
