Copper Cable

The National Police Agency reported that in the first half of 2024, there were 4,161 cases of metal cable theft from photovoltaic (PV) systems, 1.5 times increase compared to the rate of theft in 2023 with the majority of incidents concentrated in the Kanto area.

These cables, vital for the operation of solar panels, are being cut and stolen, likely to be sold as scrap metal. The increase in theft is raising concerns about the security of renewable energy infrastructure and the financial burden it places on solar energy providers.

In response, both the police and local municipalities are stepping up their surveillance efforts, particularly focusing on the distribution channels for stolen cables. Metal purchasing agents are now under closer scrutiny, and the National Police Agency is considering new preventive measures.

One proposal includes the introduction of legal restrictions that would mandate the confirmation of identity when individuals attempt to sell metal cables to purchasing agents. This legal requirement would add an additional layer of accountability and is hoped to deter the sale of stolen materials.

With the government and law enforcement agencies working together, there is hope that these strengthened measures will curb the rise in theft, ensuring that the country’s solar energy systems remain secure.
