Japan Solar Update: No.129 (Dec 30, 2024, ~ Jan 3, 2025)
Hiroshima University’s Higashi-Hiroshima Campus installed solar PV systems on 70 buildings and four parking lots through an on-site PPA. All power is consumed on-site, and EV infrastructure, including chargers and a sharing service, was introduced. This initiative supports the university’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, declared in its “Carbon Neutral x Smart Campus 5.0 Declaration.”

Location: 3-1, Kagamiyama 1-Chome, Higashi-Hiroshima City, Hiroshima, Japan
Installed capacity: PV modules: Approx 5MW
Equipment: PV modules: Approx. 9,400 pcs of 550-W bifacial PV modules manufactured by JA Solar.
Start of Operation: 2024
Overview:
PV modules were installed on the roofs of about 70 buildings at Hiroshima University’s Higashi-Hiroshima Campus. In collaboration with Sumitomo Corporation, the company is utilizing an on-site PPA to install PV power generation facilities without upfront cost. PF Higashihiroshima G.K., which was established 100% by Power Frontier Holdings, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, developed the PV facilities. Using the roofs of approximately 70 facilities and four parking lots, the company will undertake the installation, maintenance, and management of the PV facilities. The total power generation capacity s approx. 5MW, which covers about 16% of the total electricity consumption of the campus. All generated electricity will be consumed at the campus. An EV charger was also installed in the parking lot of the campus, and “eeV,” and EV-dedicated sharing service operated by Chugoku Electric Power was introduced. In January 2021, Hiroshima University made the “Carbon Neutral x Smart Campus 5.0 Declaration,” declaring that it will achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 in terms of energy used on campus, including commuting to work and school.
