Japan Solar Update: No.152 (June 9 ~ 13, 2025)
The Organization for Cross-regional Coordination of Transmission Operators (OCCTO) has released its power supply plan for fiscal year 2025, outlining future electricity demand forecasts and changes in power source composition of power sources.
Among energy sources, renewable energy is projected to see the most significant growth, with solar power playing a leading rold. According to the plan, electricity demand is expected to increase gradually, reaching 876.1 billion kWh in fiscal year 2029 and 894.4 billion kWh in fiscal year 2034. This represents an average annual growth rate of 0.6 percent from fiscal year 2024 to 2034.
The total nationwide installed capacity of solar power is forecast to grow from 76.70 GW in FY2024 to 79.81 GW in FY2025, 92.06 GW in FY2029, and 104.94 GW in FY2034. By the end of FY2034, 160 new solar power development sites totaling 1.49 million kW are planned.
At the 8th Meeting on Future Power Supply and Demand Scenarios, OCCTO also reported that renewable energy capacity could reach 260 million kW by 2050. Depending on various demand scenarios, renewable supply is projected to rise to between 170 million and 260 million kW, with solar power accounting for approximately 70% of the total.
As Japan transitions to a more diversified and sustainable energy mix, ensuring a stable supply while expanding renewable energy, particularly solar power, is becoming increasingly important.Ongoing policy developments and infrastructure improvements will play a critical role in realizing this transition.
