Japan Solar Update: No.170 (Oct 13 ~ 17, 2025)
Smart Solar Corporation has started full-scale operation of its original renewable energy microgrid in Kushiro Town, Hokkaido Prefecture, from August 14, 2025.
The project links five public facilities in the Kushiro Town Sports Park area—including a gymnasium, heated pool, elementary and junior high schools, and a school lunch center—through private electric lines.
By combining photovoltaic (PV) generation with large-capacity storage batteries, the system provides a stable electricity supply and ensures energy can be shared efficiently across facilities. The microgrid simultaneously promotes the town’s zero-carbon goals and strengthens regional resilience. With a solar carport capacity of 492.84 kWAC / 642.6 kWDC and a 250 kW / 1,000 kWh battery system, the project is expected to generate about 636 MWh of renewable electricity annually, reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 340 tons. Importantly, the system can continue supplying electricity to key facilities during emergencies, supporting disaster preparedness in this earthquake-prone region.
Looking ahead, Smart Solar aims to maintain stable operations for the next 20 years and explore expanding similar solutions to homes and businesses in Kushiro Town, contributing to the municipality’s 2050 Zero Carbon City target.
