Japan Solar Update: No.171 (Oct 20 ~ 24, 2025)
Status of Grid-Connected Battery Connection Studies and Connection Contract Applications (as of end of June 2025)
<Key points>
- As of the end of June 2025, applications for connection assessment for approx. 143 GW of grid-scale storage batteries had been received nationwide, and about 18 GW having applied for connection contracts. This represents a 2.4-fold increase in connection assessment applications compared to the end of June 2024. By area, significant increases were observed in the Tohoku, Tokyo, Chugoku and Kyushu areas
- For strengthening the rules to facilitate the prompt grid connection of grid-scale storage batteries, it is planned to consider the following: 1) requiring the submission of land-related documents when applying for connection assessment, and 2) setting an upper limit on the number of connection assessments
Applications received for connection assessment and connection contracts of grid-scale storage batteries (as of end June 2025)

Connection assessment nationwide: 59.66 GW (as of end June 2024) → 143.22 GW (as of end June 2025)
Connection contracts nationwide: 4.50 GW (as of end June 2024) → 17.80 GW (as of end June 2025)
Strengthening the rules for prompt grid connection of grid-scale storage batteries
① Requiring submission of land-related documnents when applying for connection assessment
The submission of survey results and registers* related to project sites will be required, and specific submission requirements will be considered
*The register does not have to be in the name of the applicant if the register cannot be obtained, the submission of the confirmation results will be required in another way
② Setting the maximum number of connection assessments
- For the application for connection assessment by one business operator, set an upper limit on the number of projects during the period of connection assessment conducted by general power transmission and distribution operators, and conduct connection assessment with the upper limit, starting from high-priority projects
- It is planned to further consider the specific upper limit and the definition of “one business opeartor”
Regarding information disclosure, such as briefly showing the status of responses to the most recent connection assessment, and measures in the process after applying for contracts, it is planned to consider countermeasures after understandingt the actual situation of hoarding of grid capacity.
