Kyocera Communication Systems Co., Ltd. (KCCS) has announced the start of a demonstration experiment on the reuse of lithium-ion batteries, conducted as part of a project commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The initiative aims to promote the effective use of used batteries and establish a battery resource circulation model.

For this demonstration, KCCS will utilize Honda Motor’s exchangeable battery, the ‘Honda Mobile Power Pack e:’, which is typically used in small electric mobility devices such as scooters. After being used in mobility applications, the batteries will be recovered, evaluated, and repurposed for secondary use as stationary storage systems installed at business offices, factories, and other facilities managed by KCCS.

Through this project, KCCS will focus on technical verification of battery reuse, data collection related to performance degradation, and traceability management across the battery lifecycle. The company aims to contribute to establishing standards and best practices for large-scale battery reuse and to support Japan’s transition toward a circular and decarbonized society.
