Japan Solar Update: No.183 (Jan 12 – 16, 2026)

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has developed a prototype car equipped with a PV system in its mini car EV “Sakura”, and exhibited it at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 at Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake, Tokyo at the end of October 2025. This innovative concept integrates a photovoltaic (PV) system into the mini EV “Sakura,” introducing a new era of solar-powered mobility. The prototype, named “Ao-Solar Extender,” features an electric sliding PV system that automatically charges the EV battery by extending a solar module forward from the roof when parked. By increasing the module’s surface area, the system achieves a power generation capacity of approximately 500 W.

The Ao-Solar Extender is designed to harness enough solar energy to cover up to 3,000 km of driving annually. This reduces reliance on external charging, eliminating common inconveniences such as forgotten charging sessions or circuit breaker trips. Beyond convenience, the system also serves as an emergency power source during disasters, adding peace of mind for drivers.

While on the move, the roof-mounted main panel generates up to 300 W of electricity. When parked, the retractable panel slides forward and unfolds, expanding the solar surface area and boosting total output to about 500 W. The extended panels also shield the windshield from direct sunlight, helping maintain a cooler cabin and reducing air conditioning energy consumption. When retracted, the panels blend seamlessly with the vehicle’s sleek design, minimizing air resistance and preserving a refined, natural appearance.
