Japan Solar Update:   No.18   (Sept 12~16, 2022)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) reported on the results and forecasts of renewable energy output curtailment in FY 2022 (April 2022 to March 2023). The report presented the results of simulations conducted by general power transmission and distribution operators in the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu areas, where output curtailment had already been conducted, and on the main island of Okinawa, where output curtailment is expected to be conducted in the future. In the Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Chugoku areas, output curtailment is not expected to be conducted from July 2022 to March 2023. In the Shikoku and Kyushu areas, output curtailment is expected to continue to be conducted, with a total annual output curtailment rate of 3.0%* (430 GWh) in Kyushu and 0.58%* (31.2 GWh) in Shikoku. On the main island of Okinawa, there was no output curtailment from April to June 2022, but output curtailment is expected to be conducted in the future.

In light of the fact that output curtailment was newly conducted in the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chugoku, and Shikoku areas, measures to reduce output curtailment are also being discussed. It is planned to consider the expansion of available hosting capacity in the areas adjacent to the areas where output curtailment was conducted, as well as the use of interregional interconnection lines among multiple areas where output curtailment was conducted.
