Solar PV installation is expanding beyond rooftops into other parts of buildings.

One recent example is an aluminum balcony railing with integrated solar panels, launched in June 2026 for apartment complexes and other buildings by SANKYO TATEYAMA, INC. and SANKYO ALUMINIUM under the product name “FINEMASTERSOLA.” By integrating solar panels into the railing, the product enables balcony areas to be used for power generation. It is compatible with solar panels from multiple manufacturers in a range of sizes.

The solar cell-integrated glass sections are designed to match the standard glass sections, so solar modules can replace ordinary glass panes without altering the overall look. Combined with electrical wiring routed through the interior of the coping (top rail), this creates a beautiful, cohesive exterior appearance

In Japan, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are also being promoted as part of broader efforts to expand solar PV deployment. The 7th Strategic Energy Plan highlights building-integrated systems alongside ZEBs (net-zero energy buildings) and self-consumption PV systems for private buildings.

Meanwhile, BIPV technologies are being developed for an increasingly wide range of applications, including walls, windows, and balconies. Next-generation technologies such as perovskite solar cells are also expected to expand PV deployment into locations where conventional panels have been difficult to install.

The development of products such as ”FINEMASTERSOLA” reflects a broader shift in the solar PV market, from systems primarily installed on rooftops to solutions integrated into buildings themselves. As Japan seeks to further expand solar PV deployment, particularly in urban areas, BIPV is likely to become an increasingly important area of the market.
