Japan Solar Update:  No.8  (July 4-8, 2022)

Nitori Holdings, a furniture and household retail giant in Japan, in cooperation with Sustech of Japan, announced that it will install a total of 20 MW of PV systems on the rooftops of its 30 stores and logistics warehouses by the end of 2023. The plan is to gradually increase the number of installation sites to a total of approximately 80 MW by FY 2030. As electricity prices continue to soar, Nitori aims to decarbonize and reduce fixed expenses through self-consumption of PV electricity.

The power generated will be self-consumed through corporate PPA and the surplus electricity will be sold through the FIP program. Specifically, Sustech’s power platform “ELIC” will be used to sell the surplus electricity to Nitori Group sites that are not suitable for installing PV systems, as well as to third parties. This is the first and one of the largest PV projects on the rooftops of company-owned facilities under the FIP program in Japan.

Sustech is a startup established in June 2021 that develops and operates a service to forecast the amount of electricity generated from renewable energy and other sources. It aims to support Japan’s future Green Transformation (GX) activities with technologies such as AI and IT.
