Japan Solar Update: No.57 (Aug 7 ~ 11, 2023)
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) updatesed the outlook for renewable energy output control in FY2023 ending March 2024 on Aug 3, 2023.
The amount of renewable energy output control is trending upward from the initial forecast at the end of 2022 due to a decrease in electricity demand and changes in the amount of use of inter-regional interconnection lines used.
The forecast of the renewable energy output curtailment rate for each area is 6.7% in Kyushu, 3.8% in Chugoku, up 2 to 3% from the initial forecast. Increases in curtailment rate were also reported for the Tohoku, Chubu, Hokuriku, and Okinawa areas, and the forecast of output curtailment in Kansai area was reported for the first time. For the Tokyo area, the probability of the renewable energy output control in FY2023 is highly unlikely.
Since the amount of renewable energy output curtailment is on the increase, METI plans to compile a new package of measures to reduce renewable energy output control by the end of 2023.
