Japan Solar Update: No.201 (May 18~ 22, 2026)
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced that the renewable energy surcharge for FY2026 will be set at 4.18 yen/kWh, marking an increase of 0.2 yen from FY2025.
As a result, the total surcharge amount will reach approximately 3.2 trillion yen, a record high, and the annual burden for a standard household is expected to rise to 20,064 yen, exceeding 20,000 yen for the first time.
Meanwhile, the cost of purchasing renewable energy itself has been on a declining trend, and the total surcharge amount is expected to begin decreasing after 2032, when projects approved in the early years of the scheme start reaching the end of their feed-in tariff periods.
